Melbourne Family, Newborn and Wedding Photographer

a documentary image of a melbourne family of a mother looking back at two children while one looks back at her, the mother is holding a baby

I’m a Melbourne family, newborn, and wedding photographer who knows that photos should reflect your real life. With over fourteen years of experience, I focus on life as it happens—natural, relaxed, and unmistakably you.

Your family is one of a kind. The connection you have with your crew is like no other.

It’s also not quite perfect. I mean, I’m guessing… maybe it is? But maybe there’s the occasional pencil drawing on the wall, a bit of Vegemite on a cheek, or the odd cheeky laugh rolling through the house when they’re meant to be in bed…

But maybe that’s what makes it all rather magical?

I’m invested in making incredible images for you by offering sessions that don’t feel awkward or uncomfortable. Photos that speak to the realities of life. Not too fancy or staged, nothing too hard or weird, just the real stuff – joyful, uncomplicated and beautiful.

I make photos easy for people who don’t like being photographed.

Let’s be honest, it can feel a bit weird being photographed, right? But you’re here because you know these moments matter. Your memories, your people, your life, it’s worth documenting. My job is to take the awkwardness out of the process, so you can relax and just be yourselves. When you’re comfortable, photos feel natural and real. The way it should be.

Authentic, heartfelt maternity and newborn photography, without the cheese.

My approach is gentle but straightforward, allowing space for real life to unfold. Because with babies, life does keep happening! I make photographs that are beautiful records of this fleeting and wonderful phase of life. All babies (of any age) are welcome, along with the whole family, including pets, of course.

Relaxed, natural family photography that captures your crew exactly as you are.

No forced smiles or overcomplicated setups, just real moments, real connections, and a bit of fun. I’m great with kids (and partners who’d rather not be in photos). I also offer extended family sessions to include grandparents and bigger family groups.

    Laid-back, documentary-style wedding photography for down-to-earth couples.

With over fifteen years of experience, I am wonderful at helping people feel at ease in front of a camera. My approach is people-focused and unobtrusive; I blend documentary storytelling with naturally guided portraits. I’m great at wrangling groups, keeping things running smoothly and efficiently so things feel effortless for you, and delivering beautiful images with true-to-life colours.

Hey, I’m Bec Matheson, a family, wedding and newborn photographer in Melbourne (Naarm).

I’m based in Melbourne’s outer east but travel across the city and Victoria for sessions—just ask if you have somewhere special in mind!

With over 15 years’ experience, I know that “family” means many things. Every culture, gender, and family structure is welcome—whether that’s a big, lively crew or just you and your dog. Accessibility is important to me, and having neurodivergent kids is a lived experience. I’m happy to make adjustments to ensure everyone feels included and comfortable. (See my full inclusion statement here).

I’m a friendly, slightly nerdy introvert who’s great at working with people who feel a little awkward in front of the camera. Lots of my families come back again and again, some are up to seven sessions and counting, and honestly, it’s the best part of my job.

And please, don’t think your kids have to be tiny babies to be photographed. Every stage of life is worth documenting. From newborns to teens, and right through to octogenarian grandparents, I love photographing across the full spectrum of family life.

“Oh Bec I’m crying!! They are the most beautiful photos I have ever seen! I love them all so much. I love the smiles, the light in the trees, the foot in the window, the ones with all of us, the ones of just the kids, all of them! You have captured their little personalities so perfectly. Honestly the best photographer we have ever, ever had. Much love.”

    Personal 52 Project

Every year, I set myself a goal: one photo each week of my kids.

I don’t always hit every week (sometimes it’s more like monthly!!) but that’s not the point—it’s about building a habit. In photography circles, this is called a 52 project, and for me, it’s a way to see our everyday life with fresh eyes. Regular photos are a gift to myself and my kids as they grow and change (even when they’re not exactly willing participants!).

I’m a big believer in documenting your kids, even if it’s just with your phone. Follow along on Instagram for reminders to capture your own everyday moments, plus ideas on how to use and display your photos at home.

    • Bec is incredible at every step. The planning, location suggestions, getting everyone on the same page but not cheesy, working with a small child and then producing unbelievably beautiful photos. We’ve already decided we will make this a tradition. She is THE BEST.

    • Bec clearly has a strong value set which she lives out through every part of her business. She was relaxed and fun throughout the photo shoot (resulting in beautiful photos!) and went above and beyond on the admin side. I’m so grateful with both the process and the finished product, and couldn’t recommend more highly!

    • Bec is the most brilliant, talented and generous family photographer. She has a remarkable ability to capture the little in-between, secret moments that two people share and somehow crystallise it in one perfect, precious image. You won’t regret booking her for your family or newborn photos!

  • Sooo it turns out highschool kids absolutely dont Sooo it turns out highschool kids absolutely dont talk about their parents (who’da thunk it) because I was at a school showcase thing tonight and met a parent of a kid in my daughters and I nearly fell over when asking her what she does because she said: Photographer. I think I actually did the whole embarrassing: “Did you just say photographer?! Me too!” 🤣 Anyhoo that’s excellent. And now we are going to make plans to have coffee.
As a photographer an enormous part of the job is s As a photographer an enormous part of the job is snap decision making. Camera settings, composition, where to stand, what moments to prioritise and even in post, - which shots to keep, what needs to be cropped or made black and white. I’m quite good at making quick decisions (except what to have for dinner 🫠). A reception entrance - is often a shot I’d take from the front but with the view up the stairs being some food trucks and quite a flat sky, I decided this direction was better. It was absolutely the right call. 👏🏻

I photograph families, big and small and I make it I photograph families, big and small and I make it as easy as I can. Because the more comfortable you are the better your photos are going to be - and the more “you” your photos will be. I’m anti cheese and any kind of weird “get you in the zone” because manipulative emotional coaxing makes my skin crawl. (Photo prompts be damned - we don’t go there!!) So if this sounds good to you, you can find out more over at www.becmatheson.com I currently have my books open through to March next year.
Update. So I had my wisdom teeth out (under a gene Update. So I had my wisdom teeth out (under a general) the worst initial bit was a caffeine withdrawal headache/possibly post-wedding things (sometimes we call this a photography hangover) not the teeth! which is a little embarrassing and somewhat self inflicted - although apparently anaesthetics can amplify existing things…. otherwise the first two days were unpleasant but okay (even managed to edit a wedding!) but the night of day 2 and day 3 was not and I caved to the stronger meds and they were barely cutting it. Day 4 now and hopefully the worst is over… once I remember how to chew food again (that bit is slow) and find some energy, if I never see yoghurt again I’ll be happy. I have given myself two weeks all up to recover - of which I have no regrets and then it’ll be into the end of year fun/crazy in full swing.
