FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHY IN MELBOURNE AND VICTORIA

Real, joyful and uncomplicated family photos. As you are.

If you love photos that show how life feels: the cheeky grin before the giggle, the windblown hair, and the way your kid throws their arms around your neck, then you’re in the right place, and I’m so glad you’ve found me!

As a family photographer in Melbourne, I photograph in a way that doesn’t feel awkward. It’s about taking the time to hang out, giving you plenty of space to be yourselves, and offering some gentle direction when needed, so that you’re never left wondering what’s next. Ultimately, it’s about creating photos that reflect your real life, the good, the chaotic, and everything in between. Because, in the end, the best photos come from real moments, not staged ones.

Step by Step Guide

How does booking a session work?

From the moment you contact me to receiving your photos, here’s how it works.

1

Working with Me

Sessions are relaxed and natural, with a little gentle direction. Browse pricing, FAQs, and testimonials to see if my approach feels like the right fit for your family. Then reach out here.

2

Time & Location

I’ll share my calendar and location ideas (your home works too). Weekend spots book fast, so plan ahead. Your session is confirmed with a booking fee, contract and questionnaire.

3

Get ready

I’ll send a session prep guide, with the option for a quick chat if you’d like. It’s designed to make things feel easy and help me tailor the session to your family. I’m here to answer any questions in the lead up.

4

On the Day

This is the fun part. We’ll wander, chat and see where the kids take us. If someone needs a snack or break, we pause. I’ll guide just enough to keep it flowing, but mostly it’s relaxed and easy. If the weather plays up or someone’s unwell, we just pick another day.

5

Gallery Delivery

The exciting bit! Your photos will be ready within two weeks. You’ll receive a gallery of your images to download. From there, enjoy over and over and print and share!

6

Printing & Albums

Make your photos tangible with prints, albums and frames. Ordering through the professional lab in your gallery is simple, and everything arrives straight to your door.

“Bec was the BEST!!! She turned this camera-shy Mum and her equally shy family into a relaxed, happy crew and captured a whole reel of shots that were just undeniably ‘us’ in the quickest hour ever! Thank you so much, Bec – I’m so sorry I waited so long for “the perfect time” to book a shoot – because all we really needed was you and your camera magic!”

Photos you’ll look back on and see love, connection, and everything that makes this season of life beautiful.

“Bec is delightful and genuine and those qualities get reflected back in the snapshots she will capture of your important moments. She is so warm and easy going, even the most uncomfortable subjects are at ease, which I think is why she is able to keep it all so real and alive.”

    Frequently Asked Questions

While many families enjoy the comfort of home, a change of scenery—like a park, beach, or bushland—can be the perfect option if you’re drawn to an outdoor setting. My location guide is a great resource to help you choose from fantastic spots across Melbourne and Victoria, however, if there’s a special place that holds meaning for your family, let’s make it happen there! The possibilities are endless—whether it’s city laneways, an ice cream stop, or a picnic. So, Think outside the box!

I’m a family photographer based in Melbourne, Australia and I love photographing families (Don’t hesitate to reach out if you’re a bit further away!)

Whoops, missed that bit? No worries, click here to jump back up to family photography package info.

There is a $250 booking fee to lock in your date and then you can choose from either 15 images or everything images 80+ along with print credit OR if you would like an album and additional print credit you can select the premium option.

Family sessions typically run for one hour, which tends to be the sweet spot. It’s long enough to allow for a great variety of images, but not so long that it feels overwhelming for little ones (or partners!). Plus, the novelty of the adventure—especially during an outdoor session helps keep things light and relaxed, taking the pressure off everyone.

Extended family sessions go for about an hour and half.

I can help you choose the best time of day for your specific location and the types of images you’re after.

For outdoor sessions, I recommend either early morning (as early as you’re comfortable with) or about an hour before sunset to make the most of that magical evening light. Indoor sessions usually work best mid-morning, to ensure we have enough light in your home while still being soft.

Get started with some outdoor Melbourne Eastern suburb family photography locations to check out.

You know your children best – and it’s worth prioritising happy kids over perfect lighting!

I’m confident photographing any time of day, so if there’s a better time of day for you let’s chat about it and figure out a solution together.

The simplest answer is to wear what makes you feel comfortable and most like yourself.

Examples of what to avoid: too many of the same kind of pattern, one super bright colour in a sea of neutrals, big brand names across clothing or characters on children’s clothes. My aim is for the focus to be on your faces not your clothing.

For more tips and examples, check out my detailed post Help on choosing what to wear If you’re trying to coordinate a larger group (without feeling too matchy-matchy), you might find this post helpful: What to Wear for Extended Family Photos. When you book with me you’ll have access to a prep guide to help you get ready for your photos.

I closely monitor the weather in the lead-up to your session. If conditions are unsuitable or unsafe, then we’ll reschedule or find an alternative location. I want you to have a great experience.

Life happens, if your kids are sick, let me know a few hours in advance and we can move you. In these situations, I allow up to two reschedules, after that, a rebooking fee of $250 applies.

Worried your kids might silly or ‘mess things up’. I have many tricks, I am wonderful at responding creatively to quirky kid moods and have decades of experience behind me in helping kids engage and be themselves in front of a camera.

The beauty of how I photograph means that I don’t need your child to be always looking at the camera. I work quickly and responsively to get those ‘must haves’ and go from there.

Accessibility and inclusion are incredibly important to me. So, if you have any questions about working with your neurodivergent child or if there’s a disability I should be aware of, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Additionally, if there’s any information you’d like to share with me to help make your session run smoother, I’d love to hear from you.

(Ps.The less pressure from parents before and during sessions the better. And always feed your kids first!!)

Your full gallery of images will hit your inbox within about 2 weeks to bring you daily joy –  to share, print and display in your home.

Ps. Lots of my recent work can be found over on Instagram

Yes! All sessions have access through your gallery to some of Australia’s oldest and finest print labs – they ship directly to your door. Your gallery makes it easy to visualise your images in different frames or on products like calendars and cards.

I also offer OnStone prints (oh my golly, they’re so lovely!) along with some other fun items.

If you have a preferred printer, you’re absolutely welcome to take your images to them. However, please make sure a human is involved in the process and avoid those cheap online print services or kiosk machines, as your colours will likely suffer. That said, if you’re printing something for your three-year-old to enjoy, feel free to head to Officeworks!

    What families are saying

    • As a fellow family photographer, I’m pretty particular about who I ask to take my family’s photographs. I am SO glad I found Bec!! She’s just brilliant. Firstly, her work is STUNNING – such wonderful use of light, movement, angle and colour – absolutely brilliant. And secondly, she’s just a wonderful human being! All three of my girls warmed to her beautifully and we all felt comfortable and confident to be ourselves and have fun. I will treasure the photographs she took of us and proudly display them on my walls. Thanks Bec! I’m certain we’ll be back.
      Rebecca
    • We had the BEST experience with Bec taking some family photos of us – we got some shots done in our home with our toddler and 8-month-old bubba. She did the most amazing job keeping our toddler engaged, captured the kids beautifully, made the grownups look so relaxed and nice, and gave us images we will treasure forever!! We had such a fun morning with her. The whole booking process was easy from start to finish. Worth every cent and more!

    • Highly recommend Bec as a photographer! We had Bec take some beautiful family photos for us which we treasure. She managed to capture the photos, entertain the kids and chat with us, all while working her craft – she is such a magician! Her printing service connected to her website makes printing quality photos so smooth. Can’t wait to book her again!! Thank you Bec

    • Bec was absolutely fantastic at photographing our family. She allowed us to just be ourselves during our session together and was very patient working with our young children. She is an excellent communicator and was very prompt at providing us with the final product of our time together. Would love to work with her again in the future. Thank you for capturing our young family!

Sooo it turns out highschool kids absolutely dont Sooo it turns out highschool kids absolutely dont talk about their parents (who’da thunk it) because I was at a school showcase thing tonight and met a parent of a kid in my daughters and I nearly fell over when asking her what she does because she said: Photographer. I think I actually did the whole embarrassing: “Did you just say photographer?! Me too!” 🤣 Anyhoo that’s excellent. And now we are going to make plans to have coffee.
As a photographer an enormous part of the job is s As a photographer an enormous part of the job is snap decision making. Camera settings, composition, where to stand, what moments to prioritise and even in post, - which shots to keep, what needs to be cropped or made black and white. I’m quite good at making quick decisions (except what to have for dinner 🫠). A reception entrance - is often a shot I’d take from the front but with the view up the stairs being some food trucks and quite a flat sky, I decided this direction was better. It was absolutely the right call. 👏🏻

It was a gifted session (as in someone gifted to them) and I didn’t have very much of an idea of what I was walking in to (let’s just say my info collecting systems are a little better now), it was just so gentle and beautiful.

I photograph families, big and small and I make it I photograph families, big and small and I make it as easy as I can. Because the more comfortable you are the better your photos are going to be - and the more “you” your photos will be. I’m anti cheese and any kind of weird “get you in the zone” because manipulative emotional coaxing makes my skin crawl. (Photo prompts be damned - we don’t go there!!) So if this sounds good to you, you can find out more over at www.becmatheson.com I currently have my books open through to March next year.
Update. So I had my wisdom teeth out (under a gene Update. So I had my wisdom teeth out (under a general) the worst initial bit was a caffeine withdrawal headache/possibly post-wedding things (sometimes we call this a photography hangover) not the teeth! which is a little embarrassing and somewhat self inflicted - although apparently anaesthetics can amplify existing things…. otherwise the first two days were unpleasant but okay (even managed to edit a wedding!) but the night of day 2 and day 3 was not and I caved to the stronger meds and they were barely cutting it. Day 4 now and hopefully the worst is over… once I remember how to chew food again (that bit is slow) and find some energy, if I never see yoghurt again I’ll be happy. I have given myself two weeks all up to recover - of which I have no regrets and then it’ll be into the end of year fun/crazy in full swing.
