“I honestly couldn’t be happier with our newborn photoshoot. Bec made the whole experience so lovely and it is a treasured memory of ours from those crazy early weeks. She was professional, relaxed and calm and made us feel so at ease. Our communication with her was fantastic. Our photos captured so much beauty, love and rawness in those early weeks.”

How to book your newborn session

From the moment you contact me to receiving your photos, here’s how it works.

    1

    Working with Me

Sessions are relaxed and natural, with a little gentle direction. Browse pricing, FAQs, and testimonials to see if my approach feels like the right fit for your family. Then reach out here.

    2

    When SHould I Book?

Booking with me before your baby arrives is best so I can make sure I have space for you. I’ll pencil you in around your due date so there’s room to move if baby arrives sooner or later. Once you’re in my calendar, I wait for your news!

    3

    Your baby is here!

Your baby is here! Hooray! 1 to 2 weeks is a lovely time for newborn photos, but there’s no rush. What matters most is that you feel comfortable. You’re welcome at any stage, from early smiles at 3 to 4 months to the personality and chunky rolls from 8 to 9 months.

    4

    Session Prep

I’ll send a session prep guide well before your baby arrives, with the option for a quick chat if you’d like. It’s designed to make things feel easy and you to understand how I work to take any pressure off things. I’m here to answer any questions in the lead up.

    5

    On the Day

I come to your home, usually in the morning. If you have a difficult night or an unexpected appointment, just let me know and we can reschedule. I offer gentle guidance along the way and your baby can simply keep doing their baby things: feeding, sleeping, crying, cuddling. Siblings are always welcome.

    6

    Gallery Delivery

The exciting bit! Your photos will be ready within two weeks. You’ll receive a gallery of your images to download. From there, enjoy over and over and print and share!

    7

    Printing & Albums

Make your photos tangible with prints, albums and frames. Ordering through the professional lab in your gallery is simple, and everything arrives straight to your door.

    Newborn Package Options

Natural newborn photography begins at home with your loved ones

I specialise in relaxed, in-home newborn photography in Melbourne. Getting out of the house with a baby can be tough, so I come to you. My in-home newborn sessions are designed to be easy, flexible, and calm—no rushing, no stress. Photographing your newborn at home means everything you need is close by, and the images we create reflect the spaces and rhythms of your everyday life.

Your home doesn’t need to be fancy (I live in an 80s Melbourne brick house) or spotless (you’ve just had a baby and with three kids, I get it!). All I need is a window, a bed, a chair, or a doorway. If the weather’s kind, I often include a mix of indoor and outdoor newborn photography around your home. Siblings and well-behaved pets are always welcome, too.

Newborn sessions with parents and siblings

My newborn photography sessions include parents and siblings – these aren’t posed solo baby photos (we do some solo shots of course but not with a studio feel). If you’re after a more styled, studio-based newborn photography session, I can recommend some great Melbourne photographers who do that beautifully.

My approach centres on what makes your family unique: your own clothes, your own blankets, your own pace. An image of your baby held snug in your arms or wrapped in a blanket your grandmother made is always more meaningful than anything I could bring along.

    Frequently Asked Questions

If you’re pregnant, it’s the right time to book! I pencil you in under your due date (because this can be a bit of a vague thing as anyone who has ever had a baby knows!) this ensures that there is room for you in my calendar. And then I wait to hear your exciting news!

When your baby arrives, contact me! We then sort out a date that suits – between midwife appointments and ensuring that you’re feeling ready. I’d rather you’re feeling more settled than trying to ‘do it all’ right away just because you feel that time is running away from you. Babies stay small for a good while!

I photograph newborn sessions in your home. This works especially well for ease of having everything ‘baby’ on hand and allows for more meaningful images with the spaces you use daily. Being at home also offers flexibility in providing a variety of safe spaces to photograph your baby.

I don’t need much, a window, a bed, a chair… your house does not need to be fancy or beautifully decorated. If the weather is suitable I will often photograph a combination of indoors and outside your home. Siblings and well behaved pets are also welcome to join in!

Maternity sessions are best done at home or on location late in the afternoon/early evening.

Yes my newborn sessions include the whole family! My approach is really fairly similar to how I photograph families, withe the addition of capturing baby details and highlighting this new phase of your family’s journey.

Simplicity is wonderful. I want the focus to be on your baby and your connection together. But I also want you to feel like yourselves – if you are someone who wears bright colours – wear bright colours!

You may like to have babies arms or legs out – non footed suits to show off little toes. People often opt for white or neutral plain simple suits and this works well.

Try to wear a different colour than your baby or have a blanket nearby as if you both wear the same colour may blend together.

It’s a great idea to avoid hats, beanies and bows or large frills on sleeves. These can cover you babies face unintentionally when they are held against you.

Babies don’t play to rules. I don’t expect that. If you can feed prior to your session that’s great, but likewise if you need to feed during your session this is also ok. I am not bothered by crying, nappy changes, short breaks etc. I do not mind if your baby is awake for some or all of the time, or likewise asleep  – we take things as they come. I’m here to document your experience of your child as a baby and that will look different day to day.

I am very happy to take breastfeeding photos but if you do not want this photographed just let me know.

I have three children and understand the unpredictability of it all. Please just come as you are.

During a newborn session, the focus is primarily on capturing your baby and immediate family as your family unit. However, if your parents happen to be staying with you, we can certainly take a few images with them. Please note that this isn’t an extended group session, as that involves very different logistics and can completely change the feel of your session. If you’re interested in a session specifically tailored for extended family, you can book one here.

No, I do not bring props or photograph babies in baskets, on footballs etc. Many of these kinds of posed images are done in studios where a photographer will use multiple images to create a composite (later put together in Photoshop) this allows posing to happen safely.

My approach centres around what makes your family unique – your own clothing, your own blankets. Images of your baby held snugly in your arms or wrapped in the knitted blanket your grandmother has spent hours making for you are powerful and much more meaningful.

If you would like a recommendation for a studio based photographer please ask.

Newborn life is unpredictable, if you have a date booked in and don’t feel ready in the lead up or wind up with an extended hospital stay reach out and we can find a new time. Likewise if you have a terrible night right before, give me a heads up (with some notice) and we can work out a new time.

After two reschedules there is a rebooking fee of $250.

Usually anywhere from 30-35 weeks works well – we want to aim to be able to see your pregnant belly but also not so far along that you’re too uncomfortable.

If you happen to have your baby before your maternity booking – I can easily transfer this to a newborn session or refund you.

Whatever makes you feel good! My prep guide can help with this.

Absolutely! If you have other children, please book a family session to ensure we have ample time to accommodate everyone and manage the logistics smoothly. Maternity sessions are primarily focused on the expecting woman or couple.

Yes! All sessions have access through your gallery to some high quality print labs – they ship directly to your door. And it’s very easy to visualise your images in different frames or on products such as calendars or cards. I also offer OnStone prints (oh my golly they’re so lovely!) and some other fun bits and pieces.

If you have a printer you use, you are absolutely welcome to take your images to them – please ensure a human is involved and avoid those cheap online print places and kiosk printing machines as your colours will almost certainly suffer. (If you’re making a print for your three year old to enjoy, definitely just go to Officeworks!)

    Newborn Photography Reviews

    • We’ll cherish these photos forever – my heart feels so warm looking at them every time. Bec was so lovely to work with. The photoshoot felt super relaxed and we felt like we could be ourselves. We’re so grateful that she could visit our home, since it can be challenging to leave the house with a newborn! The last thing we wanted to do was go into a studio for photos, so a home visit was amazing. We also chose Bec because of her amazing photography style. Her photos feels like a gentle peek into a cherished, love-filled memory. The way way she uses colour is incredible too.

    • Love love love our newborn photos. Bec was super easy to book with, laid back and no fuss which we love. She did a great job making us feel comfortable although with her easy going nature, this wasn’t hard. I love the natural feel of the photos, which helps create a realistic memory for our family to cherish forever. We’ll definitely use Bec again in future. Thanks again Bec! Superstar.

    • We did a newborn session with Bec the photos are beautiful and natural – can’t wait to get these printed and share these with our family. We had a really great morning and felt super comfortable with Bec – which was important because we’re still getting to grips with how to gel together as a new family. Thank you again and we will definitely see you again to document more special moments.

    Birth Photography + Fresh Sessions

I take on a very limited number of births each year, but if my schedule allows, I’d love to document yours. I work in partnership with The Birth Photography Collective, where you can request me as your primary photographer. Booking through the Collective provides access to reliable backup photographers—essential for the unpredictable, on-call nature of birth photography. It’s a bit like having a team of midwives, ensuring someone will be there to capture your birth.

Birth photography is incredibly meaningful to me, and I’d be excited to be part of your experience if the timing and location work. I often photograph births at The Angliss Hospital, Box Hill Hospital, Mercy Hospital, or home births.

Please note, I do not personally photograph free births under any circumstances.

Sooo it turns out highschool kids absolutely dont Sooo it turns out highschool kids absolutely dont talk about their parents (who’da thunk it) because I was at a school showcase thing tonight and met a parent of a kid in my daughters and I nearly fell over when asking her what she does because she said: Photographer. I think I actually did the whole embarrassing: “Did you just say photographer?! Me too!” 🤣 Anyhoo that’s excellent. And now we are going to make plans to have coffee.
As a photographer an enormous part of the job is s As a photographer an enormous part of the job is snap decision making. Camera settings, composition, where to stand, what moments to prioritise and even in post, - which shots to keep, what needs to be cropped or made black and white. I’m quite good at making quick decisions (except what to have for dinner 🫠). A reception entrance - is often a shot I’d take from the front but with the view up the stairs being some food trucks and quite a flat sky, I decided this direction was better. It was absolutely the right call. 👏🏻

I photograph families, big and small and I make it I photograph families, big and small and I make it as easy as I can. Because the more comfortable you are the better your photos are going to be - and the more “you” your photos will be. I’m anti cheese and any kind of weird “get you in the zone” because manipulative emotional coaxing makes my skin crawl. (Photo prompts be damned - we don’t go there!!) So if this sounds good to you, you can find out more over at www.becmatheson.com I currently have my books open through to March next year.
Update. So I had my wisdom teeth out (under a gene Update. So I had my wisdom teeth out (under a general) the worst initial bit was a caffeine withdrawal headache/possibly post-wedding things (sometimes we call this a photography hangover) not the teeth! which is a little embarrassing and somewhat self inflicted - although apparently anaesthetics can amplify existing things…. otherwise the first two days were unpleasant but okay (even managed to edit a wedding!) but the night of day 2 and day 3 was not and I caved to the stronger meds and they were barely cutting it. Day 4 now and hopefully the worst is over… once I remember how to chew food again (that bit is slow) and find some energy, if I never see yoghurt again I’ll be happy. I have given myself two weeks all up to recover - of which I have no regrets and then it’ll be into the end of year fun/crazy in full swing.
