SEO and Education for Family Photographers

Learn from me! Let’s talk family photography, business and SEO

I’ve been doing this for quite a while, and I’ve learnt some things along the way, especially about growing a family photography business online. I was super naive when I started out and didn’t plug into resources and other photographers minds until much later into my career (although 15 years ago, there was admittedly less around). But whether you’re just starting out or refining your approach, you’ve probably realised that running a successful photography business involves WAY more than just taking pictures. SEO for family photographers is a game-changer, but so is understanding the business side of things.

I’ve been a working photographer for 15 years, specialising in family, newborn, and wedding photography. I’m a logically minded creative with a solid grasp on the ‘boring admin’ side of things. With a background in Communication Design, I even find the nitty-gritty parts like SEO, editing, and website strategy actually fun. But working with people? That’s my favourite part of the job, despite being an introvert! Plus I still have a life I want to live, three kids, and SO many books to read!

I believe that knowledge-sharing is one of our greatest assets in this industry. That’s why I offer SEO advice for family photographers, mentoring sessions, and website strategy guidance to help you build a business that works for you.

1:1 Mentoring

Sometimes you just need to talk it out with someone who gets it. My mentoring sessions are tailored to you, whether you’re stuck on pricing, navigating client communication, refining your workflow, or just need a sounding board.

Topics to talk to me about…

  • Setting up a photography business properly – contracts, ABN etc
  • Business tools – CRMs, gallery delivery
  • Photography gear – cameras, lenses, computers, software, fun extras
  • Client management – Client contact, emailing people, tricky situations
  • Photoshoots – Timelines, indoor/outdoor tips, getting reluctant clients on board,
having a good time, managing big groups, composition and keeping creativity alive
  • Editing – tricky lighting, consistency, batching, AI tools
  • Positioning – your brand, how you show up
  • Online presence – social media, e-news
  • Websites – SEO for family photographers, copy, positioning and design
  • Forward thinking – embracing AI and new tech
  • Work/Life Balance – Parenting and work
  • Portfolio feedback
  • Being an introverted photographer
  • Support and Inspiration – How to find friends in this industry
  • Ethics – Running a more ethical business and thinking about photography’s
place in society and it’s impact on the world

“Mentoring with Bec was like chatting to an old friend, like someone who just gets your business and how you want to do it, but will happily guide you towards things you can change in order to make it better. It was so refreshing to speak to someone that wasn’t just about making loads of money or being an ‘artist’ but has a realistic view on doing this as a job and serving our clients in a way that gives them exactly what they need and keeps them coming back. This can be a bit of a lonely job sometimes so it was great to feel like I had someone in my corner. Off to take action on my list now, thanks Bec!”

More eyes on your work and more photography bookings, the answer is SEO and AIO

When I finally gave SEO the attention it deserved, everything changed. I started making strategic tweaks to my website during a tricky personal year when I was stuck home with a sick kid and within three months, I was ranking #1 on Google for my target keywords and had my most profitable in business ever, and the biggest gift was that I finally wasn’t stressed relying on the hustle.

Now I help other photographers do the same. You can only get so far asking ChatGPT for SEO tips (I know this because a photographer friend told me she had decided to do this and was still shocked when I asked her about something crucial it hadn’t covered). The tech is techy, the jargon is jargony, and most advice is way too generic. I’ll help you sort your SEO without the overwhelm—and in a way that actually makes sense for photographers.

Up-level your website

“I recently had the privilege of tapping Bec’s business brain and learning SEO from her. She has a way of making what is seemingly complex accessible and simple through her years of experience in the field – SEO no longer seems like a beast to avoid. Truly appreciate the ease of conversation and her honesty and advice throughout, no-fuss and down to earth which is perfect for me. Thanks Bec!”

“I cannot recommend Bec highly enough! As someone who is a long time fan of Bec’s work I reached out for a mentoring session to help with my own photography career and it was well worth it. Bec was so lovely and open and gave such clear advice, and made all the information really accessible (which is what I need for my ADHD brain). It is clear that she really cares about supporting new photographers and gave really solid information about the business side of things which is hard to figure out on your own! If you are starting your own photography journey, talk to Bec. She’s got you.”

“Why aren’t you helping me!!” (This is what “Why aren’t you helping me!!” (This is what my six year old demanded in the middle of the night when she sneezed and wanted her nose wiped 😑) parenting is a funny old seesaw of head shaking/eye rolling and then achingly beautiful moments.

Science birthday party for Maggie. (Praise be that Science birthday party for Maggie. (Praise be that’s the birthday parties over for the year). I made it happen. Geoff made the test tube cake (such a risky shape haha but that’s what she wanted) and Claire basically ran the entire thing. 😅 highly recommend older siblings that can do this.

Each kid had goggles, Claire ran experiment demonstrations etc like lava lamp and elephant toothpaste and blowing up balloons with a reaction, the kids used pippets to drop coloured vinegar in baking soda in the foil trays for fizzy fun. They played musical statues (ice/liquid/gas) and ate food. Including some very cool microbe biscuits that my mum made and I failed to get a photo of - I also made microbe jelly with sprinkles and lolly snakes - that I also didn’t get a photo of.

How do I rate this theme 8/10. Big impact and clear engaging activities. A little bit messy. Relatively cost effective - much cheaper than if you outsourced this. Not too hard to source things, but not very environmentally friendly although I’ll donate the test tubes and things to our school. Only real frustration was that we decided to bite the bullet and buy mini lab coats as the party bag equivalent (CUTE) BUT the shipping was delayed and they get here Monday 🤦‍♀️ instead we did lolly test tubes as a party bag (which was somewhat always on the cards) recommend preparing in advance (which I did because this is not my first rodeo)

The Thorn clan at home. I have a deep respect for The Thorn clan at home. I have a deep respect for this family and I’ve photographed them over many years in many forms. They showed up with some jet lagged having just flown in, one child sick and one who had just woken from her nap but they wanted to prioritise being together. We gave up any plan of wandering down to their local park because quite frankly there were kids not coping and so they just played and mucked around in their backyard. I love the chaotic togetherness of a big group like this. I love watching the small family units within the large and the tier dynamics of adult siblings and of cousins and grandparents with their cups and arms full. It is very good.

Photos hitting your inbox soon lovely Jane! @jthorn1711
