It is fun to be at the beach. Family photography sessions at the beach are especially wonderful for kids who need space to run, dig, climb and just be themselves. There is something about the coast that makes everything feel lighter and more relaxed. Add in a backdrop that shifts between soft sand, water, and sky, and you have the perfect setting for natural, playful family photos.
What is a good beach to have photos at?
Not every beach works in the same way for photography. I look for beaches with character — think rock formations, dunes, grasses, and wide open space. These details give variety in your images and more places for kids to explore.
I also pay close attention to tides, the direction of the sun, and safe access (especially if we are photographing little kids or maternity sessions). A location needs to feel both beautiful and practical. The most photogenic beaches are not always the most popular ones. You can bet I know where “that Flinders spot” is, but more often I will suggest a beach that is less crowded, easier to access, and just as stunning. Even better, if your family already has a beach you love, that personal connection makes your photos feel more meaningful.

When is the best time for beach photos?
Beaches look completely different depending on the time of day. Midday brings bold contrast, strong shadows, and lots of glare. It can be a tricky balance between light that is dramatic versus light that just makes you squint. For that reason, I usually recommend early mornings or late afternoons for softer light and more flattering tones.
Do not rule out winter. Melbourne’s beaches are beautiful all year round. In the cooler months you just need to dress with some layers, and you might even find the water warmer than expected on bay beaches. If you are brave enough for a dip, I am more than happy to get in the water with you. Photos in the water have a sense of freedom that feels extra special.
Best tips for family photography at the beach

- Bring sunscreen, snacks and water.
- Towels and a change of clothes are always a good idea.
- Leave the leather shoes at home. Sand, salt and water are not their friends.
- Be open to play. Get down in the sand with your kids, build a castle, chase them at the edge of the water.
- Accept that kids will probably get wet at some point. We can plan for water play at the end of the session if you want to keep things dry at first.
- Beaches can be windy, so think about what you wear. Dresses can look incredible in the breeze, but always bring an extra layer for warmth.
Family photography at the beach is varied!
Beaches across Melbourne and the Mornington Peninsula vary hugely. Some are calm and sheltered, others are wild and untamed. Some have beach boxes or piers, others are remote and empty. There is a beach to suit every family’s personality, whether you want relaxed bayside simplicity or something a little more adventurous.
