When you’ve booked extended family group photos, rain is not typically the weather you’re hoping for. With limited time with everyone in Melbourne over Easter, the Perry family decided to run with it.
I’ve had the privilege of many touch points in this family’s lives over the years: two weddings, two babies, and a few other moments to mark growth and change. With the fire roaring inside we made the most of different spaces, utilised covered areas outside, and took the opportunities of the eased drizzle to spend some time on a nearby lawn. The kids splashed in mud and handed out stickers to their aunties and uncles.
This close knit family shows how trusting the process, trusting me, leaning into what the day gives (in this case rain) and keeping the focus on connection helps to make some really incredible images. This first image here is one of my all time favourite group photos. I secretly wish it were of my own family.
Why Extended Family Photos Matter
Extended family photos are such a meaningful way to bring everyone together, especially when relatives are spread across Melbourne, interstate or overseas. These sessions often happen around milestones like holidays, anniversaries or reunions when people have carved out rare time in the same place.
It is not just about a big group portrait, although that is always part of it. Extended family sessions are also about the small in between moments: cousins playing together, grandparents with grandkids, siblings laughing, or the whole crew crammed onto a couch. They are a reminder of what family looks and feels like right now.
The beauty of photographing extended families in Melbourne is the variety of settings available, from cosy in home sessions like the Perrys’ to leafy parks, beachside gatherings or even backyards that carry family history. Whatever the weather throws our way, there is always a way to make the most of it.
Tips for a Smooth Extended Family Session
Expect and embrace the chaos
With a big group, not everything will go perfectly. The real moments often happen between the planned shots, so lean into the laughter and small interactions.
Choose a meaningful location
A family home/backyard, a park where you often gather, or a Melbourne spot with great light can all work beautifully. Pick somewhere that feels comfortable and accessible for everyone.
Plan your timing
Morning or late afternoon often works best for natural light. If you are working around naps or travel schedules, flexibility is key.
Coordinate without matching
Outfits that complement each other without being identical look relaxed and cohesive. Think about colour palettes rather than everyone in the same shirt.
